Police arrest woman in strangulation death

OCEANSIDE -- Police detectives arrested a woman who was alreadybehind bars Tuesday as a suspect in the strangulation slaying lastOctober of an elderly Oceanside man.
Yolanda Faye Harden, 24, of Oceanside, is accused of killing85-year-old Alfred Christian Polchow on Oct. 2 at his Buena HillsDrive home, then stealing his wife’s rings and credit card, policesaid.
“At first it appeared a natural death, but an autopsy conductedby the medical examiner’s office determined it was a homicide andthe cause of death was strangulation,” said Karen McDonough, policespokeswoman.
Detective Matt Christensen said Polchow’s age and healthinitially led authorities to believe he died a natural death.
When an autopsy revealed in early October that the victim diedof strangulation, the homicide wasn’t publicly revealed because itwas feared it would hinder the investigation if the suspect heardabout it, Christensen said.
Polchow’s death was the third last year in the city, policesaid.
Harden was being held in the Las Colinas jail in Santee onunrelated fraud charges when she was arrested Tuesday as a murdersuspect, McDonough said.
As of Tuesday evening, Harden was being held without bail onsuspicion of murder, grand theft of an access card and burglary, ajail clerk said. Harden is scheduled to appear Thursday morning inthe Vista court.
Investigators are still seeking a possible witness. Christensensaid a witness saw someone walk past Harden at the corner of BuenaHills Drive and North Way about 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 2.
Police said Harden used a ruse that day to get into Polchow’shome, saying she needed to call a cab. The victim’s wife, notfeeling well, had stayed in bed that day, Christensen said.
The wife saw a woman matching the suspect’s description in herbedroom, going through her dresser drawers, said McDonough. Shesaid the wife also saw the woman leave out the back door.
“The wife got up, saw her husband slumped over on the couch andcalled 911,” McDonough said.
Paramedics pronounced Polchow dead at the home, she said.
“The wife thought that three of her rings and her credit cardwere missing,” said the spokeswoman.
Christensen said two of the stolen rings were sold that day at apawn shop. Police discovered that, and also that the credit cardhad been used to make long distance phone calls from a Vistaresidence linked to Harden, the detective said.
Police are asking anyone who saw Harden near Polchow’s home tocall (760) 435-4639.
